Description
The "old marsh" of the title refers to the ancient wetland ecosystems of the Sanjiang Plain in Heilongjiang Province, habitat for cranes, herons, and dense stands of Phragmites reed. This print likely depicts the marsh in its early thaw, when standing water reappears between compressed reed beds still carrying the ochre and grey tones of winter. Hao Boyi's prints of wetland subjects characteristically use horizontal compositional bands to convey the flat immensity of the Beidahuang landscape, with focal elements — a cluster of dry reeds, a bird silhouette, reflected sky — punctuating an otherwise expansive ground. The modifier "old" suggests an emphasis on the deep geological character of the marsh, distinguishing it from cultivated or reclaimed land.
