Description
Dated 2026 and editioned 19/30, this print depicts a modern multi-story building distinguished by curved balconies and large windows, set within a tropical landscape under a textured cloudy sky. The handwritten inscription identifies the subject as The Studios of Key West, an artist residency facility in Florida. The print belongs to the tradition of [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) (pictures of famous places), updated to a contemporary American institutional setting. The textured clouds suggest careful attention to surface variation — possibly achieved through goma-zuri (sesame-seed printing), in which a partially loaded [baren](/glossary/baren) produces a speckled effect, or through layered impressions of varying opacity. The curved architectural lines of the balconies test the limits of woodblock carving, where rounded elements must be cut so the keyblock and color blocks align through [kento](/glossary/kento) registration. The 2026 dating places this print within Spitzack's recent body of work following his 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference recognition in Echizen.
