Description
Dated 2016 and editioned 1/20, Restricted depicts a house behind a closed gate, surrounded by colorful trees and greenery, with a pathway leading toward the dwelling. The handwritten title carries deliberate weight: a restricted property suggests gated access and exclusion, transforming what could otherwise read as a domestic landscape into a comment on American residential boundaries. The closed gate functions as the compositional pivot, dividing public pathway from private dwelling. The varied colors of the surrounding trees indicate multiple printing passes, each applying a separate hue from a separate carved block, registered through [kento](/glossary/kento) marks cut into the block edges. As one of Spitzack's earlier dated works, this print indicates that his sustained engagement with American vernacular architecture as a subject for mokuhanga predates the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference recognition in Echizen that confirmed his standing in the international mokuhanga community by nearly a decade.
