Description
This undated print by Chobunsai Eishi, recorded on [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e).org from the Japanese Art Open Database under reference 00028945, depicts a courtly pleasure boat distinguished by a carved phoenix figurehead on its prow. The vessel type, a gigeki-bune crowned with a stylized geki bird, was associated in Japanese tradition with Heian imperial court pageantry, and ukiyo-e artists of the late eighteenth century revived the motif as a mitate device, transferring courtly elegance to the boating culture of the Sumida River and the Yoshiwara waterways. Eishi's treatment is consistent with his Edo [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) sensibility. The figures within and around the boat appear in his characteristic elongated proportions, with sloping shoulders and slender hands, while the architecture of the prow itself is described with the precision expected of a Kano-trained ukiyo-e draftsman. The phoenix head's beak, crest, and tail feathers are drawn with the controlled keyblock work that distinguishes Eishi from his contemporaries, while the surrounding water is suggested through restrained linear ripples rather than dramatic spray. The palette stays in his preferred register of muted greys and indigo. The print is preserved in the Japanese Art Open Database aggregated on ukiyo-e.org and not currently linked to a single museum accession, but its style and subject align unmistakably with Eishi's late-Tenmei to Kansei output of courtly mitate prints. As such it represents the strand of his work most committed to recasting aristocratic motifs in contemporary Edo terms.
