Description
Designed about 1796, this Chobunsai Eishi print, preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London under accession O413027, depicts a group of fashionable Edo women catching fireflies at dusk. Firefly catching, or hotaru-gari, was a refined summer pastime in late-eighteenth-century Edo and a favorite subject for [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) designers, who used it to combine seasonal sentiment with elegant figure groupings. Eishi handles the theme with his characteristic restraint and elongation. The women stand or stoop with the willowy proportions that became his signature, sloping shoulders and narrow waists balanced against long parallel folds of summer kimono. A small fan or low lantern brings the fireflies into a soft focus without resorting to dramatic light effects, and the background is implied through subtle gradations rather than narrative detail. As a Kano-trained ukiyo-e designer, Eishi brings academic discipline to the keyblock work and to the spatial arrangement of his group, allowing the figures to read as a calm friezelike composition rather than an active scene. The palette favors soft greys, pale indigos, and muted greens, with the fireflies suggested through small touches of warmer tone. The Victoria and Albert Museum's catalogue entry for accession O413027 documents the print as an Edo [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) of the late Kansei era. The sheet is representative of Eishi at his most distilled, when his elegant figure type and seasonal subject matter found their most graceful synthesis.
