Crisscross

An abstract composition of large ribbed, lantern-like or paper-shade forms rendered in burnt orange and deep red with black outlines, clustered in the upper portion against a pale cream ground marked with scratchy black brushwork and crisscrossing diagonal lines. The mottled, textured surface—visible orange and rust speckling over cream and tan—derives from the chine-collé application of Japanese mulberry paper within this 1985 lithograph. Daniel Kelly's "Crisscross" balances the rounded, layered orb shapes above with the angular black strokes below, creating a tense, energetic mood between soft curves and sharp lines.
