"Wakana" (Chapter 35 in some numberings) refers to "New Herbs" — one of the most extended chapters in The Tale of Genji, spanning what are traditionally counted as two chapters (Wakana I and II, Chapters 34 and 35). These chapters cover a turbulent period including Genji's aging, the affair between his wife Murasaki and Prince Niou (indirectly), and the secret liaison between Kashiwagi and the Third Princess that will produce devastating consequences. Ebina's print distills a chapter of great narrative complexity into a single poignant image.
CH35- Wakana was created by Ebina Masao (海老名正夫).
CH35- Wakana depicts figures, daily life, and interiors.
