Description

"Young Fresh Greens I" (Wakana, Chapter 34) opens the extended Wakana section of The Tale of Genji, covering Genji's fiftieth birthday celebrations and the arrival of the Third Princess — Genji's new young wife, thrust upon him by her imperial father — who will be the unwilling catalyst for the tragic events that follow. The "new herbs" or "fresh greens" of the title suggest the renewal of spring in contrast with Genji's aging, a ironic juxtaposition of youth and decline. Ebina's print captures the lavish festivity of Genji's jubilee year.
