"Hatsune" (First Warbler, Chapter 23) depicts the New Year's celebration at Genji's Rokujō-in palace, where each of the four ladies he has installed in the four wings of his estate receives him in her own seasonal garden. The chapter takes its name from the first call of the bush warbler (uguisu) — the herald of spring — heard in the garden. Genji moves from wing to wing, the poem exchanged with each lady keyed to her season and character. Ebina's print captures the structured elegance of this moment in Genji's carefully arranged domestic world.
