Graphic Studio Dublin • Ed Miliano: Spring-Tree-ed-miliano
by Ed Miliano

by Ed Miliano
This is an additional impression or state within Miliano's Spring Tree group, one of several closely related prints in which the artist returns to the same motif under spring conditions. The repeated treatment of a single subject is consistent with Miliano's ongoing seasonal practice and with a broader contemporary mokuhanga interest in serial variation, where small changes in color, registration, or block selection produce distinct but related impressions. The spring state typically emphasizes new foliage and a heightened sense of light, and water-based pigment on [washi](/glossary/washi) is well suited to rendering the half-translucent quality of emerging leaves; layered impressions build chromatic depth without the surface heaviness of oil-based inks. The compositional reduction to a single tree against a quiet field places the work in dialogue with both Japanese seasonal printmaking and the European tradition of motif studies. As with the rest of the series, the print is associated with Graphic Studio Dublin, the Irish workshop that has been central to Miliano's distribution and exhibition.
