Graphic Studio Dublin • Ed Miliano: Winter Tree (Framed)
by Ed Miliano

by Ed Miliano
Winter Tree is the leafless counterpart to Miliano's spring, summer, and autumn impressions of the same subject, and arguably the impression in which the structural drawing of the keyblock carries the most descriptive weight. With foliage stripped away, the tree's branching armature becomes the primary graphic element, set against a ground that in the Irish winter palette typically reads as cool grey, pale ochre, or muted slate rather than pure white. Mokuhanga's affinity for atmospheric, low-chroma color makes it a natural medium for this season: thin water-based layers and [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations can register the heavy, low light and damp air of an Irish winter without resorting to opaque white pigment. The "Framed" notation indicates this impression is being shown or sold matted and glazed, the standard presentation for fine-print work at Graphic Studio Dublin. Within Miliano's cycle, the winter image functions as the cycle's quietest and most linear state, providing the structural baseline against which the foliated seasons are read.
