Trace 21-27

A dense field of short, scratchy charcoal marks in dark blue-gray and black covers the canvas, radiating outward from a glowing yellow square outline at the center; faint traces of red and blue pigment flicker through the darker areas surrounding it. The interior of the yellow square holds the same dark, textured field as the border, giving the square a hollow, luminous frame rather than a filled shape. Emi Uchida's *Trace 21-27* (2021, oil and charcoal on canvas) is composed entirely of these layered abstract marks, with no recognizable figures or setting.
