Description
This second variant of Hiyoshi Mamoru's Amayadori depicts the rural Korean custom of sheltering from an unexpected shower, rendered in woodblock with the observational directness characteristic of his Korean-subject prints. Where the primary impression establishes the core composition, this version may represent a reworked color arrangement or a subsequent printing run in which ink saturation, register, or the choice of pigment for the rain passages has been adjusted. Hiyoshi's depictions of Korean farmland consistently emphasize the horizontal flatness of the peninsula's agricultural plains — a stark contrast to the mountainous landscapes more typical of Japanese [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) prints of the same period. The rain itself, conveyed through diagonal line blocks or graduated wash, functions both as weather event and compositional device, drawing the eye across the picture plane toward sheltering figures.
