Description
This print depicts hollyhock — aoi in Japanese — a tall-stemmed flowering plant associated in Japan with the Aoi Matsuri festival of Kyoto and with summer. The hollyhock's vertical growth habit, with blossoms arranged along a central stalk, presents a natural compositional axis that printmakers could exploit to create tall, narrow formats or to organize a diagonal thrust through the picture plane. Individual blossoms are rounded and ruffled, requiring multiple closely registered color blocks to capture their layered petals in shades of pink, red, or white. The leaves of hollyhock are broad and lobed, providing strong tonal contrast with the lighter flowers. In the [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) tradition, the plant's association with specific festivals and seasons would have been understood by contemporary viewers without requiring explicit notation.
