Description
A scene at the threshold of a traditional sento (public bathhouse), likely depicting the characteristic gabled entrance, hanging noren curtain split between the men's and women's sides, and the soft glow of interior lighting. Ido's compositional choices for such genre scenes tend toward the architectural: clean geometries of wooden eaves, shoji panels, and tiled roofs, with the noren providing a focal point of color and calligraphic interest. The bathhouse subject — both quotidian and increasingly endangered as sento decline across Japan — aligns with his broader project of documenting traditional architectural and cultural spaces. Mokuhanga technique permits the soft transitions of evening light through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi), and crisp keyblock outlines preserve the precise carpentry of the eaves and lintel. The print operates as both genre observation and architectural record.
