A Girl with an Attendant

Isoda Koryusai's A Girl with an Attendant, dated to about 1760 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's catalogue, captures the artist working close to the threshold of full-color nishiki-e printing. The young woman and her companion are shown walking together, with the senior figure raising her sleeve to gesture and the attendant following a half-step behind, head slightly inclined. The composition relies on the disciplined contour line that distinguishes Koryusai's mature Edo bijin-ga, even at this comparatively early stage in his career. Trained in the Kano tradition under Ishikawa Yukimoto before he entered the ukiyo-e milieu around the studio of Suzuki Harunobu, Koryusai brought to figure work a draftsman's economy that is visible in the way the two bodies share weight and counter-pose. The print sits at the moment just before the introduction of multi-color brocade printing in 1765 transformed the technical horizons of the Edo print, and impressions of this period are valued as records of how earlier benizuri-e or limited-palette conventions still informed the design even as the medium prepared to expand. The Metropolitan Museum's entry positions the print within Koryusai's earlier production, before the wave of Yoshiwara series in the late 1760s and the fashion-atlas project Hinagata Wakana no Hatsumoyo that would absorb so much of his energy in the following decade. Looking at A Girl with an Attendant alongside the later courtesan portraits clarifies what Koryusai carried forward from his beginnings: an unsentimental description of the relationships between figures, a restrained palette, and a willingness to let blank ground do the work of atmosphere rather than crowding the sheet with decorative incident.
