Description
The subject likely depicts an overwhelming multiplicity of game enemies — insects, creatures, or enemies in swarm — translated into the decorative insect traditions of Edo [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e). Woodblock printing is well suited to repetitive pattern, and Henry may exploit this formal quality to populate the picture field with tiled or patterned enemy figures. The Meiji-period illustrator Kakiemon produced influential insect prints that balance scientific precision with decorative arrangement; this print may draw on that tradition while referencing a specific game source. The technical challenge of a dense, multi-figure composition requires careful key-block carving and precise color registration across the full sheet.
