Description
This print is Julie Murphy's contribution to the International Mokuhanga Conference Europe exhibition held in Echizen in 2024, in which she represented Ireland alongside other European practitioners of the water-based Japanese woodblock technique. Echizen is significant in the history of mokuhanga as one of Japan's principal washi-making districts, supplying handmade kōzo and gampi paper for both historical ukiyo-e printers and contemporary studios; an IMC exhibition sited there links current practice back to its material origins. Murphy's presence in the 2024 selection indicates the recognition of an Irish strand within the European mokuhanga community, which has expanded steadily since the conference series began in Kyoto in 2011. Like other works in the IMC exhibitions, the submission would have been printed using nori-bound water-based pigment, carved blocks aligned through kentō registration, and pressure applied by hand with a baren on dampened washi — the unmodified mokuhanga sequence as inherited from the ukiyo-e workshop tradition.
