Description
This print is one of several catalogued under sequential portfolio identifiers on Julie Murphy's studio site, indicating a working archive of editioned mokuhanga rather than a single titled composition. Mokuhanga depends on precise registration: each colour requires its own carved block, aligned to the previous impression by means of kentō — small L-shaped and straight notches cut into the block edges that hold the paper in fixed position from one printing to the next. The accuracy of this system determines whether layered colours sit cleanly against one another or drift, and is one of the technique's principal craft demands. Murphy's continued production of editioned woodblock prints in Ireland represents the steady spread of mokuhanga in the British Isles, where the tradition is taught through workshops rather than formal apprenticeship. Her 2024 inclusion in the IMC Europe exhibition at Echizen places her within that international network.
