Smoke Series 2

by Kakyoung Lee

Date:
2018-2019
Medium:
120 charcoal drawings (installation, Artspace)

Description

The second Smoke series increases the count to one hundred and twenty sequential charcoal drawings and presents them in an installation context at Artspace, where the projected animation is shown alongside the physical drawings rather than as a discrete screen-based work. The added frames extend the duration of the stop-motion sequence and allow longer, slower passages of dispersal — the kind of thinning where smoke leaves the field of view altogether before the next mass enters. As in Smoke Series 1, the soft, friable charcoal mark and the partial-erasure trace between frames are central: the drawings record their own history, so the installation foregrounds the residue of mark-making as much as the moving image it produces. Within Lee's wider practice the move from suite to installation is the period in which she begins to treat the room itself, rather than the screen or the page, as the site of printed motion.
