Description
Maurstig's submission to the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC), held in Echizen, was made for the conference's exhibition program, which gathers work from mokuhanga practitioners worldwide. Echizen, in Fukui Prefecture, is one of Japan's principal centers for handmade [washi](/glossary/washi), with a documented papermaking tradition reaching back over a millennium. The choice of venue placed paper itself at the center of the conference's discussions. Mokuhanga's character is bound to the absorbency, surface, and longevity of washi, and works submitted to IMC exhibitions tend to foreground that material relationship. Maurstig has been part of the international mokuhanga community since her participation in the Nagasawa Art Park Project in 2006, the residency that preceded the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory and the founding of IMC itself. The 2024 Echizen submission situates her continuing landscape-and-mapping practice within that ongoing professional context, alongside artists from across Europe, North America, and Asia.
