Description
Another untitled woodblock by Kate Milford, part of the working body that brought her to the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference Americas exhibition in Echizen. Contemporary mokuhanga in the IMC orbit is identifiable by several material traits: the slightly uneven [baren](/glossary/baren)-burnished surface as opposed to the mechanical flatness of press-printed relief; the visible deckle edges and chain lines of handmade [washi](/glossary/washi); and pigment that sits within the paper fiber rather than on top of it, owing to the water-based nori binder. Artists in this community frequently move between figuration and abstraction across a single body of work, and untitled designations often signal pieces conceived as exploratory color or surface studies rather than narrative images. Without a published reproduction, this print's specific composition cannot be described, but its provenance in Milford's catalogue places it within the contemporary expansion of mokuhanga as a studio medium beyond its Edo-Tokyo origins.
