Description
The sixth untitled mokuhanga in Kate Milford's documented body, produced within the contemporary practice that brought her to the 2024 IMC Americas exhibition in Echizen. The International Mokuhanga Conference, founded in 2011 and held triennially, has been the principal organizing structure for non-Japanese practitioners of the medium and has driven the formation of a recognizable North American mokuhanga community. Works shown at IMC juried exhibitions are typically printed in modest editions on Echizen [kozo](/glossary/kozo) or [mitsumata](/glossary/mitsumata) [washi](/glossary/washi), using pigments ground into nori paste and applied with hake brushes before [baren](/glossary/baren) burnishing. Many practitioners in this community trained originally in lithography, intaglio, or screenprinting before adopting mokuhanga, and the resulting work often shows formal concerns drawn from those traditions rather than from [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) iconography. Without a title or reproduction, this print is documented through its placement in Milford's working body and her connection to the IMC exhibition circuit.
