Description
Selected for the International Mokuhanga Conference Americas juried exhibition held in Echizen in 2024, this print represents Hargrave's engagement with the traditional Japanese water-based woodblock technique. The IMC exhibition was held in Echizen, a region historically significant for [washi](/glossary/washi) production, where prints were displayed alongside other juried works from across North America. Mokuhanga prints submitted to such exhibitions typically demonstrate the medium's distinctive properties: water-based pigments printed onto dampened washi using the [baren](/glossary/baren), allowing for layered transparencies and [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations not available in oil-based relief printing. The selection criteria for IMC juried shows emphasize both technical handling of registration ([kento](/glossary/kento)) and contemporary aesthetic engagement with the medium. Hargrave's inclusion places her within the network of North American mokuhanga artists who have adopted and adapted the technique through workshops, residencies, and conference attendance, contributing to the medium's continued international development beyond Japan.
