Description
Another untitled mokuhanga print from Hargrave's practice, this work continues her exploration of the Japanese water-based woodblock medium. The absence of a descriptive title suggests an emphasis on the visual and material properties of the print itself — the texture of the [washi](/glossary/washi) support, the tonal range achieved through water-based pigment application, and the registration of multiple blocks. Contemporary mokuhanga artists frequently produce untitled works during sustained studio investigations, where iterative carving and printing of cherry blocks generates variations on a compositional theme. The technique's reliance on the [baren](/glossary/baren) for hand-burnishing produces a surface unlike that of mechanically printed relief, with subtle absorption variations across the sheet. Hargrave's body of work, recognized through her 2024 IMC Americas selection, situates her within a community of North American artists who have learned mokuhanga through workshops, residencies, and institutional programs, contributing to the medium's evolving international vocabulary.
