Description
Katsukawa Shunei's Court Ladies on a Balcony Watching a Woman and a Girl Chasing a Man in the Yard under Blossoming Cherry Trees, dated to around 1795, illustrates a moment of springtime play observed from a higher vantage point. On the upper level, elegantly dressed women lean over the balcony rail to watch the comic chase below, in which a woman and a child pursue a male figure through a garden filled with flowering cherry. The subject reflects the longstanding Edo ukiyo-e interest in seasonal pleasures and informal social moments, here with a strong narrative element that links the print to broader genre painting traditions. Although better known for his yakusha-e portraits within the Katsukawa school, Shunei in this composition deploys the same compositional discipline to a multi-figured genre scene, balancing the upper register of observers against the lower register of action. The cherry blossoms supply both the seasonal frame and a structural device that organizes the picture vertically. The work demonstrates the wider repertoire that Katsukawa school artists undertook in the 1790s as Edo print publishers competed for variety across actor prints, beauty prints, and genre scenes. The sheet is preserved at the Art Institute of Chicago and documented at https://www.artic.edu/artworks/81404, where it stands as a less-familiar facet of Shunei's output.
