Held by the Art Institute of Chicago and dated to about 1781, this Katsukawa Shunjō hosoban print depicts the actor Segawa Kikunojō III as Onatsu in the play Kabuki no Hana Bandai Soga, performed at the Ichimura Theater in the third month of 1781. The Art Institute identifies the sheet as the left side of a probable diptych, meaning that in its original conception it would have paired with a second hosoban depicting the male partner role to form a confrontation or romantic-pair composition — the standard Katsukawa-school approach to two-figure kabuki tableaux. Segawa Kikunojō III (1751–1810) was the leading onnagata (female-role specialist) of the Tenmei era and one of the most frequently depicted actors of the entire Katsukawa-school corpus, with his distinctive features recorded across hundreds of surviving prints by Shunshō, Shunkō, Shun'ei, and the school's lesser designers including Shunjō. The Soga-mono context is significant: Kabuki no Hana Bandai Soga is a Soga-related title in the broader cycle of Edo theatrical adaptations of the Soga monogatari, the medieval revenge narrative that supplied the kabuki stage with its richest single source of dramatic material.
