Description
Katsukawa Shunsho's print in the Art Institute of Chicago shows Ichikawa Danjuro IV in a Shibaraku role, possibly from the production Ima o Sakari Suehiro Genji (The Genji Clan Now at Its Zenith) at the Nakamura theater beginning on the first day of the eleventh month, 1768. The Shibaraku (Just a Moment!) entrance is one of the most famous theatrical conventions in kabuki, traditionally associated with the Ichikawa acting lineage: a hero in extravagantly oversized aragoto costume bursts onto the stage at the climactic moment, shouting Shibaraku! to halt the unjust execution of innocent victims. The role demands tremendous physical and vocal projection, and the visual spectacle of the giant rectangular sleeves, the makeup of bold red kumadori lines, and the upright posture made it a perennial favorite of Edo audiences. Ichikawa Danjuro IV, head of the Ichikawa line, brought authority to the part, and Shunsho's design captures the visual extremity of the costume alongside the actor's individual features. As founder of the Katsukawa school of Edo ukiyo-e, Shunsho was the principal documentarian of leading kabuki actors in the Meiwa and An'ei eras, and his portraits of successive Danjuro generations are key resources for tracing the development of the Ichikawa house style. The Shibaraku role was, in essence, a brand identity of the Ichikawa family, and Shunsho's renderings of it constitute important visual evidence for the theatrical icon. The Art Institute impression preserves the firm linework and careful color organization that defined Katsukawa school production at its peak, demonstrating the technical accomplishment of the Edo publishing trade as well as Shunsho's mature draughtsmanship.
