Description
Documented through ukiyo-e.org from the Art Institute of Chicago's collection, this Katsukawa Shunsho yakusha-e depicts Ichikawa Danjuro V as Atomi no Ichii in the play Miya-bashira Iwao no Butai (The Pillar Shrine, Stage of Rocks), performed at the Morita Theater in the Seventh Month of 1773. Danjuro V was the towering male-role star of the Edo stage in this period, and as founder of the Katsukawa school, Shunsho made his career portraying such leading players with individuated features that distinguished his prints from earlier, more generic actor imagery. Here Danjuro takes a forward-leaning stance characteristic of an aragoto-tinged role, costumed in patterned robes that fall into bold angular folds. Atomi no Ichii is a relatively obscure dramatic vehicle today, but seventh-month productions at Morita-za were typically lighter or experimental programs slotted between the major kaomise (face-showing) and New Year seasons. By committing the role to a single-sheet portrait, Shunsho gave fans a memento that preserved Danjuro's likeness in a piece they might otherwise have forgotten. The figure dominates an unbroken ground, the standard Katsukawa school device for foregrounding the actor's body and face. Crisp keyblock outlines, restrained color, and a confidently asymmetric placement reinforce the Edo ukiyo-e habit of reading kabuki imagery as both fan tribute and graphic design.
