Description
This Katsukawa Shunsho triptych portrays three of the most celebrated actors of late Edo kabuki together on a single composition: Ichikawa Danjuro V as Miura Kunitae on the right, Segawa Kikunojo III as Yasukata in the centre, and Iwai Hanshiro IV as Utou on the left, in Godai Genji Mitsugi no Furisode, performed at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1782. The eleventh-month kaomise production introduced the company's stars for the new theatre season, and Shunsho's multi-sheet yakusha-e of the event served as both publicity and commemorative print. The Katsukawa school had pioneered the use of grouped portraits across two or three hosoban sheets, and Shunsho here orchestrates the three figures so that costumes, gestures and gazes interconnect across the joins. Danjuro V's robust presence anchors the right side, while the two onnagata Kikunojo III and Hanshiro IV are positioned to balance and complement his weight. The set is preserved in the Clarence Buckingham Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. Together with the other Shunsho prints recording the 1782 Nakamura kaomise, it forms a key visual document of late An'ei Edo ukiyo-e, the moment when the Katsukawa school's mature manner held undisputed authority over actor portraiture in the city.
