Description

The Yahagi bridge at Okazaki on the Tokaido — the longest wooden bridge in Japan and a sight that awed all travelers on the highway — appears in this print from the Shokoku Meikyo Kiran (Famous Bridges) series. Stretching across the Yahagi River for nearly 200 meters, the bridge was a marvel of Edo-period engineering and a landmark that every pilgrim to Ise would cross on their way west.
