Hokusai's genre scenes, bijin-ga (beautiful women), and miscellaneous subjects represent the breadth of his career across more than seven decades. The market for non-landscape Hokusai prints has strengthened as collectors seek beyond the most famous designs.
Description
The mountain pass at Sakanoshita — where the Tokaido road descended steeply from the Suzuka mountains into the Ise Plain — is depicted in a composition that emphasizes the rugged drama of the pass's terrain. The Sakanoshita section of the Tokaido was notorious for its difficulty and for the inn culture that grew up at the pass's foot to serve exhausted travelers.
