"Ashioto" — footsteps — suggests the sound of someone moving through a space that Nishijima has rendered in stillness, the traces of human presence felt but not seen. A narrow Kyoto lane or traditional streetscape carries this quality beautifully in Nishijima's hands: the worn stone paving, the weathered wooden facades, the gap between stillness and the life that inhabits these spaces when no one is looking. His precise architectural rendering and sensitivity to light and shadow transform the mundane street into a meditation on time and passage.
