A bridge in the traditional Japanese townscape is both a practical structure and a compositional gift: the curve of its arc, the reflection in the water below, the way it frames the houses and landscape on either side. Nishijima renders Nakahashi Bridge with the structural precision that characterizes all his architectural work, but the bridge form also introduces movement into what might otherwise be a static composition — the implied crossing, the suggestion of journey, the bridge as threshold between two different portions of the town's life.
