Description
Ancient Capital — Camellia is a [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) study pairing a flowering camellia (tsubaki) with the implied setting of Kyoto, the koto or 'ancient capital' of the title. The camellia is a winter-into-spring bloomer in Japanese poetic tradition, and prints in this register typically present a close framing of glossy ovate leaves and a single open bloom, often with one or two unopened buds for compositional rhythm. Ohtsu's approach to this subject relies on densely registered red and pink flat fields for the petals, with subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations in the leaf greens to suggest waxy reflection. The carved keyblock outlines the leaf veins and stamens with restraint, allowing the printed color to carry the form. Within Ohtsu's wider catalogue — which leans toward thatched farmhouses and rice paddies — the kacho-e prints function as quieter botanical interludes, drawing on the same affection for the seasonal vocabulary that organizes his rural landscapes.
