Description
Autumn in Kyoto (Komyoji) depicts the precincts of Komyoji, the Jodo-sect temple in Nagaokakyo on the southwestern edge of Kyoto whose long approach is roofed by maples that turn deep vermillion and ochre in late November. As a [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) of a famous autumn site, the print likely organizes the composition around the tunnel-like sando path or the temple's sanmon gate, with the foliage compressed into stacked color planes typical of Ohtsu's autumn work. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations along the path and at the upper edges of the maple canopy soften the saturated reds into the sky and ground. The block carving favors flat fields of color over linear detail, with leaf masses indicated as silhouettes rather than individually rendered. The print belongs to Ohtsu's recurring engagement with Kyoto's temple landscapes — Komyoji, Gioji, and others — where the architecture of religious quiet and the seasonal palette of the Kansai countryside meet.
