Description
Water Bird — Mizutori — depicted in its natural aquatic setting, the bird associated with the surface of water, the shoreline, or the open water. Water birds occupied a distinct category in the Japanese kachō-ga tradition, their relationship to the reflective surface of water creating compositional opportunities unavailable with land or arboreal birds. Kimura's contemporary treatment of the water bird subject renders the animal in his characteristic bold, graphic style, the water's surface providing an atmospheric context for the bird's form.
