Description
Act Eleven is the final act of the Kanadehon Chushingura, the theatrical retelling of the Ako vendetta in which the forty-seven ronin avenge their lord's death by killing the official Kira Yoshinaka. This climactic act — the night raid on Kira's compound — was among the most frequently depicted in [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e), appearing across woodblock prints, illustrated books, and [surimono](/glossary/surimono). Utamaro's treatment likely emphasizes the dramatic night setting, with figures rendered in dark indigo and black against snow or torchlight. The series context is incomplete in the surviving title, but Utamaro produced several Chushingura-related works, approaching the vendetta narrative through the lens of character study rather than pure action, consistent with his interest in psychological portraiture.
