Description
Act Seven of the Kanadehon Chushingura centers on the scene at the Ichiriki teahouse in Kyoto, where the ronin leader Oboshi Yuranosuke feigns debauchery to deflect suspicion while secretly planning the vendetta. This act was among the most theatrically rich in the play, combining erotic undertone, political intrigue, and moral complexity — themes well suited to Utamaro's characteristic blend of [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) and narrative subject matter. The print likely depicts Yuranosuke among courtesans at the teahouse, with the surrounding figures and interior setting rendered in the detailed architectural and textile vocabulary typical of Utamaro's multi-figure compositions. The contrast between apparent pleasure-seeking and concealed purpose gives the image its dramatic weight.
