Kitagawa Utamaro's An Attractive Woman Who Looks Like the Actor Iwai Hanshiro V is a late ukiyo-e print of 1806, the final year of Utamaro's life, in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art (accession 1943.28). The title encapsulates one of the most distinctive games of Edo bijin-ga: a beauty is presented not as a generic type but as a woman whose features echo those of a celebrated kabuki onnagata, here Iwai Hanshiro V, one of the leading female-role specialists of the period. By pointing his viewers toward an actor resemblance, Utamaro mobilizes the cross-traffic between bijin-ga and yakusha-e, between the celebrity of Yoshiwara women and the celebrity of kabuki stars, that animated Edo's popular print market.
