Description
This page from the second volume of "Ehon shiki no hana" (Picture Book: Flowers of the Four Seasons), published in 1801, demonstrates that Kitagawa Utamaro's mastery extended far beyond Edo bijin-ga into the refined realm of botanical illustration. The composition pairs chrysanthemum, the imperial flower associated with autumn and longevity, with narcissus, the modest harbinger of late winter, creating a meditation on the cyclical passage of seasons that animates so much classical Japanese poetry. Utamaro's training under Toriyama Sekien instilled in him a deep familiarity with kyoka poetry circles and the cultivated tastes of urban literati, and this illustrated book was conceived for precisely that audience. Each blossom is rendered with calligraphic economy: the chrysanthemum's tightly packed petals splay outward in radial precision, while the narcissus stems arc with graceful restraint. The printmaker's craft, central to ukiyo-e production, is evident in the subtle gradations of ink and the delicate registration of multiple blocks. Held in the Art Institute of Chicago, this leaf reflects the increasing sophistication of late Kansei and early Kyowa era illustrated books, which combined poetry, calligraphy, and image into integrated literary objects. Far from the bustle of the Yoshiwara that dominated his earlier work, Utamaro here channels the quiet pleasures of contemplating nature, demonstrating the breadth of subject matter that the ukiyo-e tradition could accommodate and the artist's own versatility within that floating world of pictures.
