Description
From the first volume of "Picture Book: Flowers of the Four Seasons (Ehon shiki no hana)," published in 1801 and held by the Art Institute of Chicago, this Kitagawa Utamaro page depicts a New Year manzai performance at the mansion of a daimyo. Manzai was a celebratory entertainment that toured aristocratic and wealthy commoner households at the start of the lunar new year, in which a tayu and saizo (a comic dialogue duo) chanted auspicious words to the rhythm of a drum, exchanging witty banter to bring good fortune. The composition documents an annual ritual that bridged elite ceremonial culture and the popular performance world that ukiyo-e usually celebrated. Utamaro's role in this kyoka illustrated book was to translate the seasonal events of the calendar into elegant images keyed to accompanying verses by contemporary poets. While he is most famous for Edo bijin-ga of Yoshiwara courtesans, illustrated books like this show his fluency with full architectural settings, multiple figures of different social ranks, and the precise notation of clothing and gesture. The book belongs to a sophisticated late-Kansei genre that married print culture, poetry circles, and seasonal observance. The Art Institute of Chicago's impression preserves the calligraphic crispness and quiet refinement that make these albums treasured objects of ukiyo-e study.
