Description
Painting, from the series Comparisons of the Artistic Pride of Precious Children (Gei jiman kodakara awase), One of Seven Lucky Treasures (shichifuku no uchi), is a late work by Kitagawa Utamaro dated about 1806 in the Harvard Art Museums record. The series treats children's accomplishments, here the practice of painting, as a comparative subject and frames them within the broader idea of children themselves as among the household's seven lucky treasures. Utamaro shows a mother and child engaged with brush and paper, exploiting his command of Edo bijin-ga to render the woman's tender attention while attending closely to the child's small body and intent gesture. As ukiyo-e, the print belongs to the genre of mother-and-child imagery (boshi-zo) that Utamaro helped popularize and refine, offering scenes of intimate domestic instruction in painting, music and reading. The composition typically uses a quiet ground that throws the figures into relief, with the painting implements supplying the narrative anchor and visual interest of texture. Color is restrained, drawing on the late-period palette of soft grays, browns and warm flesh tones to support the picture's contemplative mood. The conceit of comparing the artistic prides of various children flatters parental viewers while creating an occasion for varied compositions across the set. By his mid-fifties Utamaro had thoroughly mastered such material, and the Harvard sheet shows him sustaining his characteristic refinement of line and feeling even amid the pressures of late career.
