Description
The Chushingura Drama Parodied by Famous Beauties: A Set of Twelve Prints (Komei bijin mitate Chushingura, junimai tsuzuki), dated 1789 and held in the Art Institute of Chicago, is a complete twelve-act mitate set in which Kitagawa Utamaro replaces the warrior cast of the celebrated kabuki and bunraku drama with the women of contemporary Edo. Chushingura, the dramatization of the forty-seven loyal retainers, was one of the most frequently staged plays of the Tokugawa stage, and ukiyo-e artists routinely reimagined its episodes through parody, or mitate. Utamaro's twist is to retain the structural logic of the act sequence while populating every scene with bijin from teahouses, the Yoshiwara, and the urban fashion world. Each sheet plays on the gap between a known dramatic moment and the casual gestures, glances, and groupings of women, turning revenge tragedy into a witty meditation on present-day style. As a set, the prints showcase Utamaro's ability to compose for both single-sheet impact and larger narrative coherence, and they reveal the sophistication of his audience, which would have recognized the Chushingura iconography even when reduced to a teacup or a draped hand. The publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo's investment in such an extended series testifies to the commercial centrality of bijin-ga in late-eighteenth-century ukiyo-e. The Art Institute of Chicago's holdings of this work allow scholars to compare the consistency of Utamaro's drawing across the full twelve designs, and to track how Kitagawa Utamaro positioned Edo bijin-ga as a vehicle for cultural commentary.
