Description
Dated 1805 and held by the Art Institute of Chicago, The Poet Fun'ya no Yasuhide, from the series Modern Children as the Six Immortal Poets (Tōsei kodomo rokkasen), is a Kitagawa Utamaro design in which the classical canon of the rokkasen (six poetic immortals of the early Heian period) is reimagined by recasting each poet as a contemporary Edo child. Fun'ya no Yasuhide, traditionally associated with the imagery of wind, here becomes a small modern figure in a charming version of period costume, drawn with the rounder face and softer proportions Utamaro reserved for children. The conceit is characteristically Edo: a witty mitate-e that overlays a venerable cultural framework onto the lived world of late-eighteenth-century townspeople, allowing the viewer to enjoy both the literary reference and the playful contemporary reinterpretation. The series complements Utamaro's well-known Edo bijin-ga of adult women by extending his repertoire of human characters into childhood, while still emphasizing fashion, gesture, and a refined sense of line. Compositionally, the artist uses minimal background and selective color to throw the figure forward, often with the cartouche identifying the original poet placed prominently for the literate viewer. As such, the Art Institute's impression illustrates Utamaro's enduring interest in mitate strategies and shows how, late in his career, he continued to enlarge the social and cultural scope of ukiyo-e bijin-ga to include the children of Edo as legitimate subjects of pictorial sophistication.
