Description
Act IX (Kudanme) of Kanadehon Chushingura, from Kitao Masayoshi's perspective-picture series held by the Art Institute of Chicago, depicts the snowy mountain retreat where Oishi Yuranosuke has retired in apparent dissolution while secretly plotting the vendetta. The act is among the longest and most psychologically complex in the entire cycle, involving family confrontations, disguised loyalty, and the eventual revelation of Yuranosuke's true plan. The Art Institute dates this impression to 1815, but the design is from circa 1791-1794, suggesting a later reissue of the original blocks. The horizontal o-oban color woodblock print uses uki-e perspectival receding lines to organize the deep architectural space of the mountain residence and the snowy garden beyond. Masayoshi balances the formal severity of the geometric setting against the emotional density of the scene, which involves Yuranosuke's son Rikiya, the elder Honzo disguised as a komuso priest, and the women of the household. As one panel in the complete narrative cycle, this print preserves an essential link in Masayoshi's treatment of Chushingura and demonstrates the lasting commercial demand for his perspective compositions decades after their initial publication.
