Description
Act VI (Rokudanme) of Kanadehon Chushingura, in Kitao Masayoshi's perspective-picture series held by the Art Institute of Chicago and dated to circa 1791-1794, depicts the rustic farmhouse scene in which the loyal retainer Hayano Kanpei takes his own life after a tragic chain of mistaken events. Set in a country dwelling rather than the polished interiors of the earlier acts, the print gives Masayoshi the opportunity to apply uki-e perspective to a more humble setting. The receding lines of the farmhouse's exposed beams and tatami rooms organize the composition, while the figures of Kanpei, his wife Okaru, and her aged parents are arranged within the geometric framework. The horizontal o-oban format allows the artist to extend the interior space laterally, drawing the viewer into the unfolding tragedy. Among the eleven acts of the cycle, Act VI is one of the most domestically intimate, and Masayoshi's perspectival treatment manages to dignify the rural setting without sacrificing the precision of his geometric drawing. The print is an instructive example of how uki-e techniques could be applied across the social register, from castle corridors to peasant houses.
