Description
Perspective Picture of the Night Attack from Act XI of the Storehouse of Loyal Retainers (Chushingura juichidanme youchi no uki-e), held by the Art Institute of Chicago, depicts the climactic raid on the residence of Kira Yoshinaka by the forty-seven loyal retainers. Although the museum dates the impression to 1815, the design itself belongs to Kitao Masayoshi's circa 1791-1794 uki-e series and was likely reissued. The print is the dramatic culmination of the Kanadehon Chushingura narrative: in the snowy night of the twelfth month of 1702, the assembled ronin under the leadership of Oishi Yuranosuke storm Kira's mansion, fight through the household guards, and exact their vengeance for the forced suicide of their master. Masayoshi handles the scene with characteristic uki-e perspectival receding lines, organizing the architectural setting and the multiple combatants into a coherent deep-space composition. The horizontal o-oban format gives him the lateral expanse for the dispersed groups of attackers and defenders. The visual rhetoric of the print balances the geometric severity of perspectival lines against the agitated diagonal of swords and combatants, capturing the violent climax of one of Edo's most iconic narratives.
