Description
A companion to the first "Happy Time" print, this woodblock likely presents a variant composition on the same theme of animal contentment—possibly a different pose, color arrangement, or background pattern while retaining the same subject. Kaneko frequently produces paired or sequential prints around a single title, allowing collectors to observe how he reworks compositional problems across states. The mokuhanga process, which requires a separate block for each color layer, lends itself naturally to such variations: a shift in one block's registration or ink density can substantially alter the print's mood. The graphic clarity of Kaneko's line work and his use of flat, saturated color—often printed on [washi](/glossary/washi) with minimal gradation—give both versions of this print their characteristic visual immediacy.
