Description

A companion to the first "Happy Time" print, this woodblock likely presents a variant composition on the same theme of animal contentment—possibly a different pose, color arrangement, or background pattern while retaining the same subject. Kaneko frequently produces paired or sequential prints around a single title, allowing collectors to observe how he reworks compositional problems across states. The mokuhanga process, which requires a separate block for each color layer, lends itself naturally to such variations: a shift in one block's registration or ink density can substantially alter the print's mood. The graphic clarity of Kaneko's line work and his use of flat, saturated color—often printed on washi with minimal gradation—give both versions of this print their characteristic visual immediacy.
