Description
The numerical sequence carries an embedded Cantonese homophonic meaning: "1314" is widely read as 一生一世 (yat sang yat sai), "a whole lifetime," a phrase used in declarations of lasting commitment. Pairing it with "2020," a year of significant civic upheaval in Hong Kong, and dating the work 2047 produces a layered temporal statement that is at once private vow and public reckoning. The woodcut, executed in Lai Siu-Wai's graphic vocabulary of clean carved line and saturated planar fields, treats the digit string as both image and inscription — text rendered through the deliberate physical process of cutting and burnishing rather than typed. Within Lai's broader practice, which examines Hong Kong identity through the small artefacts of daily life (receipts, screens, signs, timetables), this work locates intimate language inside the constraints of a politically charged calendar.
